Stomach Flu in Winter: Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention

Feb 13, 2026

Stomach flu is a common viral infection, especially during winter when people spend more time indoors. In this video, Dr Anubhav Jain, Senior Consultant & Unit Head – Gastroenterology, Max Hospital, Gurugram, explains that stomach flu is most often caused by viruses such as rotavirus and norovirus, which spread easily through close personal contact, including handshakes and hugs.

Common symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, and diarrhoea, which can sometimes lead to severe dehydration. Treatment is usually conservative, and antibiotics are not required. Staying well hydrated is the most important step, while anti-spasmodic medicines may help relieve abdominal pain. If symptoms worsen or oral intake becomes difficult, prompt medical attention is essential. Maintaining strict hand hygiene, especially during winter, is key to preventing the spread of infection within families.
