Young Man Recovers After Rare and Complex Liver Surgery

in Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali

A 27-year-old man, who had been su ering for months with severe abdominal pain, repeated jaundice, and even episodes of sepsis, finally found relief after undergoing a highly complex liver surgery at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow.

Uncommon Diagnosis: Hepatolithiasis at a Young Age
His problems began when stones developed inside the small channels of his liver - a condition called hepatolithiasis. This disease is usually seen in older individuals and is extremely uncommon at such a young age. Because of the stones and a blockage in his bile duct, he had already undergone two PTBD procedures to drain the infected bile. Doctors also attempted an ERCP, but the scope could not pass through because of a tight stricture (narrowing) in his common bile duct. Advanced imaging with MRI and MRCP later confirmed the seriousness of his condition: stones inside the liver and swollen bile ducts that could not drain properly.

A Complex Surgery to Save the Liver
To save his liver and prevent further infections, the surgical team decided on a major operation. The young man underwent a left hepatectomy (removal of the left lobe of the liver), removal of the obstructed extrahepatic bile duct, and a right hepaticojejunostomy - a procedure in which the remaining healthy bile duct is directly connected to the intestine to ensure smooth drainage. The surgery went smoothly, and he recovered well after the operation. He was discharged in a stable condition, and during his one-month follow-up, he reported feeling healthy and symptom-free.

Expert Care That Made the Difference
The patient expressed heartfelt thanks to Dr Waliullah Siddiqui, Director of the Department of HPB Surgery and Liver Transplant at Max Hospital, Lucknow, whose expertise and attentive care were crucial to his recovery. Dr Siddiqui and his team are well known for successfully managing some of the most challenging liver, pancreas, and bile duct surgeries, including advanced robotic procedures, in accordance with international standards. This case highlights how timely diagnosis, expert surgical care, and advanced medical facilities can change the life of even the most complex patients - o ering hope and healing when it is needed most.
