A young girl presented to BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital Emergency Department on 20th April 2024 within 30 minutes after an unfortunate incident of amputation of all her fingers at the level of the mid palm of her right hand. She went to deliver lunch to her brothers at their factory and accidentally inserted her hand into a foam-cutting machine. Before she could respond, her hand was completely severed. The team of plastic surgeons jumped into action immediately, preserved the amputated part, and controlled the profuse bleeding.
A prompt response from the Department of Plastic Surgery under Dr. Lokesh Kumar and Dr. Avtar Singh Bath saved the young girl's hand and helped preserve her quality of life, allowing her to lead a fulfilled, normal life without disability. This incident is being reported to draw attention of the general public and even the medical first responders, as they should know what to do, how to preserve the amputated part, and understand the golden period for re-plantation of the amputated part.
The first thing to do is control bleeding by putting pressure and elevating the limb. The second thing is to preserve the part properly as this plays a key factor in determining the success of the surgery. The amputated part should not be put in ice directly. The part should be wrapped inclean wet cloth and placed in a clean plastic sealed bag and then the bag containing the amputated part should be put in the ice box. Thirdly, one must reach the medical facility that has expertise in replantation procedures at the earliest, preferably within six hours as earlier the surgery starts in the “golden period”, the higher the chances of success of surgery. At BLK- Max Super Speciality Hospital, the Department of Plastic Surgery has a super specialized, and experienced team of plastic surgeons who excel in replantation procedures and conduct it regularly with a very success rate.
