World’s 1ˢᵗ Same-Day Discharge Bilateral Total Knee Replacement

At Max Multi Speciality Centre, Panchsheel Park, we successfully completed the world’s first same-day discharge of both knee replacement surgeries on 10ᵗʰ January 2026 for a 65-year-old woman from Agra. The trust and faith that she bestowed upon the team led by Dr Sujoy Bhattacharjee, Chairman & Chief, Robotic Joints Replacement Surgery, Max Healthcare, is beyond words.

Mrs UG, 65 years old, female from Agra, had been diagnosed osteoarthritis in both knees for a long time. However, she has a fear of hospitals, which delayed her procedures and caused her to suffer pain.
 
Since Max Multi Speciality Centre, Panchsheel Park, had already been performing total knee replacement with same-day discharge, it was easy to plan her surgery. The patient and her family were educated and convinced of the need for a total knee replacement in both knees, and they agreed to robotic technology-led knee replacement surgery, which would allow her to go home the same day, as they had their home in Agra.

The entire process went extremely well, and the patient began exercises & walked with support within 3 hours of surgery. It was exceptional to see that she climbed the stairs and walked without support within 4-5 hours after surgery. At the time of discharge at 6 pm, there were no external stitches or staples, and the muscle-sparing (subvastus) approach meant the patient did not require any aggressive rehabilitation support.

This achievement marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of same-day discharge in joint replacement surgery, which not only makes the procedure cost-effective but also reduces the risk of hospital-acquired infection.
