Kidney Cancer: Early Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

Kidney cancer, or renal cell carcinoma, is one of the top 10 most prevalent cancers in both men and women. Although it tends to develop silently, being aware of its warning signs can lead to early diagnosis and significantly improve treatment outcomes.

Unfortunately, early kidney cancer is not likely to have noticeable signs. It is usually discovered incidentally on imaging tests for some other unrelated condition. However, there are a few signs that must not be overlooked, particularly if they become worse or persist over time.

Blood in the Urine (Haematuria)

One of the most frequent initial symptoms of kidney cancer is blood in the urine. It might be pink, red, or cola-coloured. Occasionally, it's invisible to the human eye and can only be seen during a urine test. Blood in the urine, although it can also result from infections or kidney stones, always needs to be investigated by a physician.

Lower Back Pain or Flank Pain

Persistent back pain on one side of your back, below the ribs, can be an indicator of kidney cancer. The dull pain or discomfort might also travel to the abdomen. Such pain does not subside with rest or movement, unlike in the case of muscle strain.

Unexplained Weight Loss

A weight loss that occurs suddenly without any changes in diet or exercise can be a sign of an underlying condition, such as kidney cancer. Cancer can influence your appetite or metabolism, leading to quick weight loss.

Fatigue and Weakness

Fatigue due to cancer is not like usual tiredness. It tends to be long-lasting, not helped by resting, and might be accompanied by a general sense of weakness or malaise. If you persistently feel exhausted without an obvious cause, it's worth exploring.

Intermittent Fever

Recurring fevers that aren't due to infection occur in some people with kidney cancer. These intermittent fevers can be low-grade and occur over several weeks.

A Mass or Lump in the Abdomen

From time to time, during a physical examination, one may feel a noticeable swelling or mass in the side or lower back. Though less frequent, it's also an indication that requires further investigation.

Elevated Blood Pressure

The kidneys assist in blood pressure regulation, and kidney tumours disrupt this process. Newly developed or hard-to-treat hypertension may be associated with a kidney issue.

When to Consult the Doctor?

If you experience any of these symptoms, particularly if they persist for more than two weeks, it's essential to consult a specialist. Early diagnosis via imaging scans such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI can have a dramatic impact on treatment.

Though these symptoms are often the result of other conditions, they should never be dismissed. Kidney cancer, if detected early, is usually treatable, even curable. Awareness is your best protection. Be proactive, listen to your body, and don't hesitate to seek a doctor's opinion if things feel off.

Your health is in your control. Know the signs. Act early. Live well.
